Professional Experience:
Medical Laboratory Scientist in HIV Immunology Department
Parirenyatwa Government Hospital Harare
01.2003 - 09.2005
Carrying out all tests in the department as a Junior Laboratory Scientist under the HOD
and also supervised the students when they came during rotations for training. There was a lot
of emphasis on HIV especially with the Kaposi Sacorma patients and many other patients from
various clinics at the biggest referral hospital in the country. I also carried Immunofluorescence
tests such as antinuclear antibodies, anti-mitochondrial antibodies and the whole range of
antinuclear tests. During the weekends and after hour duties. I also had the responsibility of
training nurses to carry out the Rapid HIV tests under the Prevention of Mother to Child
Transmission Programme (PMTCT). During this time I also worked at UZUCSF helping with
whatever research programmes they had going and got to do PCR and other specialized assays on a part time basis.
HOD Serology/Immunology Department
Pathcare Namibia
09.2006 - 11.2011
was responsible for all the day to day running of the department including ordering
reagents, carrying out all the tests, qualify control, correlating new kits that had been introduced
and also correlated a Cotinine machine which had been upgraded. I had to be very competent
in Dark Field Microscopy as we did Anti-Nuclear Antibody tests using Fluorescent Microscopy.
There was a lot of training of student Technicians and Technologist interns. We performed ABO
and Rh D typing, antibody screening, identification and red cell antigen typing using microtitre
plates/cards and tube method. While carrying out duties in the Immunology Department I was
also working after hour, and weekend duty in the Chemistry, Endocrinology and Haematology
Departments on a duty roster timetable.
Night Duty Medical Technologist
Pathcare Namibia
02.2014 - 11.2016
Night duty was a one person job carrying out all urgent and non-urgent work. It gave
me confidence to comfortably work in any department. I have learnt to prioritise work and act on
urgent test sample requests, signing out results as well as telephone abnormal results to
Clinicians and to the hospital wards. I was responsible for all work in Chemistry, Haematology,
Immunology/Serology, Microbiology and Endocrinology. In Microbiology I carried out all urgent
work especially CSFs, urine, blood culture, stool, fluids and swabs. In Haematology, blood film
preparation and examination of samples with abnormal parameter was an every night routine. I
even had to keep an eye especially timing on the Cytology/Histology samples while they were
being fixed in formalin and the cassettes preparation.
